President Franklin D. Roosevelt's response to the attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base in Hawaii may be the most defining statement in our nation’s history.
It led to our entrance into WWII – the deadliest conflict in human history, producing an unfathomable number of fatalities and devastation beyond comprehension.
On a much different level, some businesses experience their own date of infamy. These circumstances don’t alter world history; however, they change the lives of those affected.
Outside forces, such as competitors, technology, economic conditions, legal authorities or even Mother Nature, don't just knock on the door. They kick the door in and force a confrontation.
Many businesses succumb, but a few survive. Regardless, the individuals associated with the business are changed forever.
A failed business not only impacts the financial status and relationships of current ownership, employees and suppliers, it also affects future generations.
You may know (or have read about) entrepreneurs who started a business, only to be confronted with nightmarish circumstances. They lost everything: money, home, marriage, friends, pride, dignity or even more.
Some individuals become so distraught from failed businesses, they take their life.
This dark side of owning a business is one of the motivations behind my weekly PhilTakes and my speeches. I believe many small business owners live on emotional islands, yearning to be part of a community of kindred spirits. It’s easy to be communal when things are good, but it’s tough when things turn dire.
I get that.
I had my date which will live in infamy.
It is deeply personal and private. Only one other person knows everything that happened, and it will stay that way.
However, I can share lessons learned to help you or any business owner avoid your own date with infamy.
