I would like to redact

There are some aspects of my business life I would like to redact.* (*To be honest, I wasn't familiar with this word until the Mueller report release made it trend.)

According to Merriam-Webster, redact, for purposes of this post, means to obscure or remove (text) from a document prior to publication or release.

On June 19th, I will celebrate my 41st anniversary in the business world. Along the way, I have enjoyed moments of incredible success and accomplishment, been blessed to work with great people and have enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. I’ve been complimented, appreciated and recognized for my efforts, including from people I have helped along the way.

That’s the good stuff.

Unfortunately, there’s the not so good stuff too. I’ve made stupid decisions, took unwise actions and done things I wish I hadn’t. I’d prefer to eliminate these moments from my past, or at least redact them.

But I can't—and I shouldn't.

As I look back at these events, I realize each one positively contributed to my current position. They taught me what not to do, and helped me make better decisions going forward.

In hindsight, they weren’t anchors that sank me; they became launching pads, boosting me upward.

I know I’m not the only one.

As a business owner, you have similar episodes you would like to redact. Don't let these define you or your business. Decide how you will use them to propel your business to the next level of success.

How have you recovered from a situation you’d like to redact?
